Bilfinger has entered into a partnership with recycling tech company Umincorp, who have developed a patented Magnetic Density Separation (MDS) technology for plastic recycling. The Umincorp MDS recycling process has a 40% higher recovery of plastics and a 10% higher output quality than currently used recycling processes. After the successful commissioning of the first industrial-scale MDS recycling facility in Amsterdam, Bilfinger supports Umincorp in standardizing their plant concept for international expansion by executing the engineering, procurement and construction.

As a concrete follow-up to the partnership with Umincorp, Bilfinger developed a concept engineering package for the blueprint of a new plastic recycling plant. In this plant, raw PMD waste (plastic, metals and beverage cartons) are sorted and processed from plastic waste into pure plastic raw material: circular plastic. Additionally Bilfinger supported Umincorp in the realization of the “rPET factory Rotterdam” by doing the Basic and Detailed engineering of the plant. In the plant, PET flakes from the MDS facility are sorted in transparent and colored flakes. The sorted flakes are further processed to produce near virgin (transparent) PET pellets, which can be directly processed by the plastic industry. As of November 2022, Umincorp’s “rPET factory Rotterdam” was officially opened.
