Superconducting Undulators (SCU)
Overview
Superconducting undulators define the new standard for insertion devices. The use of superconductivity allows higher flux and wider photon energy range compared to any permanent magnet based device. This solution enables existing and new facilities to reach higher performance and broader tunability ranges.
How it works
The KIT-BILFINGER SCUs exploit superconductivity to increase the strength of the alternating magnetic field on beam axis. They operate at cryogenic temperatures, but do not require liquid helium, as they are fully conduction cooled. The flexible UHV beam pipe gives the possibility to open the gap in cold conditions (when the coils are not powered), allowing for increased safety. Beam transparency is assured by the use of integrated corrector coils.
Features
- RELIABLE: our SCUs demonstrated long term operation in the KIT ring and serve as source for user beamlines
