Bilfinger: Order volume for Hinkley Point C exceeds half a billion Euros

Moreover, with the elevation to Tier 1 supplier status, Bilfinger is now also positioned as a preferred partner for future nuclear projects.

  • Two additional contracts worth €400 million: Bilfinger to provide execution design, supplier management, procurement, pipework fabrication and construction works for Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) and Balance of Nuclear Island (BNI)
  • Delivery of the two new contracts begins immediately and continues until 2025

Bilfinger’s current volume of work for the new nuclear power plant Hinkley Point C (HPC) in England now exceeds the half a billion Euros mark. The Group’s references, proven track record in large-scale nuclear new-build projects and its close working relationship with HPC were key factors for the award of the work to Bilfinger. The significance of the new contracts is underscored by Bilfinger’s elevation to a Tier 1 supplier to the project, one of a small number of selected partners who form the strategic steering committee and who together are preferred suppliers for future projects.

In June 2020, Bilfinger was awarded two new, additional framework contracts by HPC for NSSS (Nuclear Steam Supply System) and BNI (Balance of Nuclear Island) with a combined volume of ~€400 million. The contracts will be booked in tranches under Bilfinger’s Technologies and Engineering & Maintenance Europe segments. The work on the two contracts will begin immediately and continue until 2025. Most recently, Bilfinger had booked contracts for the Balance of Plant (BoP) package as well as design preparation and planning work for the solid waste treatment systems.

Bilfinger CEO Tom Blades: “Crossing the half-billion order intake threshold and our subsequent recognition as a strategic partner through the Tier 1 status is a tremendous achievement for Bilfinger. We are proud to be an integral part of the HPC project and look forward to many future opportunities with EDF.”

Simon Parsons, Hinkley Point C MEH Programme Director, said: “We are delighted to be able to extend our relationship with Bilfinger, with the award of these additional work packages. A primary factor in our decision was not only Bilfinger’s ability to demonstrate their experience and expertise in delivering large scale nuclear construction projects but also their commitment and ethos to working within a trusted partnership.”

Bilfinger UK, Bilfinger Engineering & Technologies Germany and Bilfinger Peters Engineering France jointly provide seamless delivery for the two new contracts. They provide execution design, procurement, supplier management, fabrication and installation of pipework and equipment for the Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS). The system transports the steam needed to drive the turbine generator unit and ultimately produce low-carbon electricity. Bilfinger will also provide execution design, supplier management, procurement and fabrication of pipework for the Balance of Nuclear Island (BNI). The Nuclear Island is at the heart of the nuclear power plant, including the reactor, the steam generators and primary safety and piping systems.

In February 2020, Bilfinger was awarded the contract for Hinkley Point C’s Balance of Plant (BoP) package, comprising piping systems that support the operation of the power station. Bilfinger was previously recognized as one of 15 strategic suppliers to EDF’s Hinkley Point C project in 2018 and had initially received contracts for design preparation and planning work together with the solid waste treatment. All contracts combined bring Bilfinger’s current total order volume for the Hinkley Point C project to more than €500 million.

Hinkley Point C is the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK in over 25 years. It is expected to provide low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes, create thousands of jobs and bring lasting benefits to the UK economy.
