Better perspective with just a click: Bilfinger and CABB cooperate in digital plant documentation

  • Development of the Bilfinger cloud application in medium-sized companies
  • Cooperation partners tap into promising business potential

Top notch chemical products: The production of monochloroacetic acid as an intermediary product for, among other things, the pharmaceutical industry places particularly high demands on production facilities and processes. To ensure smooth operations it is therefore vital that all relevant data from production and maintenance is not only available but that it can also be assessed in real time. In order to optimally support CABB GmbH, Bilfinger is expanding the current cooperation in the maintenance and engineering areas. As part of a joint project, the two companies are developing digital plant documentation for selected sub-plants at the CABB location in Gersthofen. In use are the cloud-based Bilfinger platform for Maintenance, Modifications and Operations (MMO) as well as the application COMOS Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) version 10.2, a solution for plant engineering and documentation developed by Siemens. For Bilfinger, this project is a valuable reference that demonstrates the performance of its digital maintenance tools for medium-sized companies.

Industrial services provider Bilfinger and CABB are successful partners: As a subsidiary of Bilfinger SE, Bilfinger Maintenance GmbH has been delivering engineering and maintenance services at the Gersthofen location since 2006. The current project covers the MMO platform newly-developed by Bilfinger which creates a digital twin of the plant that allows for extensive access to all relevant maintenance and operational data. Tests are also conducted under realistic conditions to determine what advantages the COMOS MRO tool offers in the management of maintenance – especially for inspections and administrative tasks. CABB anticipates significant efficiency gains from the new software basis. These are made possible through centralized, paper-free maintenance processing, simplified management of access rights to the plant data and, not least, through the combination of all plant data. In this way, Bilfinger and CABB create a foundation for comprehensive assessments within the scope of business intelligence (BI) and predictive maintenance.

Laying the groundwork for the digital plant management of tomorrow
For CABB, the use of the MMO platform in connection with COMOS as a central solution for the assessment of plant data marks a decisive step forward toward automated maintenance and inspection processing. “The assessments and cross-links of our plant-based data inventory that are now possible represent an important milestone for the digital transformation of our production processes”, says Ferdinand Seitz, CABB’s Head of Technology at the Gersthofen location. “It automatically creates attractive perspectives for our plant strategy. If the platform proves itself in testing, we receive a software for the risk-based maintenance of further plants.”

Bilfinger also taps into valuable business potentials as a result of the cooperation with CABB. As already demonstrated by the successful pilot project with Münzing Chemie GmbH in Heilbronn, development of a customer-specific solution for operational documentation is especially attractive for medium-sized companies. “Among our objectives is the development of a standard solution for plant documentation and to produce a certificate of suitability from COMOS MRO for maintenance services”, explains Franz Braun, Chief Digital Officer at Bilfinger SE. “As a result of the cooperation project with CABB GmbH, we are coming much closer to achieving this goal and, at the same time, expanding our service offerings to the advantage of all the customers we support with inspections, maintenance and documentation management.”
