Inclusion at Bilfinger: Pia's Success Story

When Pia Knappertsbusch began her journey at Bilfinger 16 years ago, she had no idea how profoundly this job would shape her life. “I always wanted to have my own apartment, to live independently and I realized that pursuing training as an industrial clerk would be the best path forward,” Pia says with a smile. One particularly memorable moment came during her visit to a power plant. “Experiencing the sheer size and scale of the facilities in person was awe-inspiring,” she recalls.

From Spare Parts to Invoicing

Pia remained loyal to Bilfinger even after her training, working in the spare parts department for ten years. In 2021, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, an unexpected opportunity for professional growth arose: Pia transitioned to invoice auditing, initially intended as a short-term support role. However, this new position became a turning point in her career, offering not just professional challenges but also personal growth. “I developed a lot of new skills and exceeded my own expectations,” she reflects. Today, Pia has been a permanent member of the invoice auditing team for nearly four years.

For someone like Pia, who lives with a physical disability, Bilfinger proved to be more than just a workplace. It became a place that actively sought solutions and provided opportunities. Pia has been working from home since 2020, with a permanent arrangement tailored to her needs. But the company went even further: when Pia required the assistance of a 24-hour caregiver, Bilfinger stepped up. Colleagues distributed flyers and actively helped in the search for a caregiver. This period left a lasting impression on Pia. “Bilfinger has always supported me and opened up new perspectives,” she says with conviction.

Team Spirit Defines the Workday

Pia’s current role in invoice auditing is more than just a job. Together with two colleagues, she forms a small team. Their digital communication via email, phone, and Teams is characterized by trust and collaboration. “We help each other and find solutions together,” is how Pia describes the team spirit that defines her workday. “What excites me about invoice auditing is that it’s a truly varied job with a lot of personal responsibility,” she says.

But it’s not just the team that makes Bilfinger a special employer for Pia. She highlights how large companies like Bilfinger, with their structure and resources, can make a significant difference when it comes to fostering inclusion. “There are more opportunities to find individual solutions here than there are in smaller companies,” she explains. For Pia, this has always been a decisive factor.

Inclusion is more than just a buzzword. It means creating individual solutions, breaking down barriers and providing employees with a professional home. Pia’s conclusion is clear: “Bilfinger has shown that an inclusive workplace benefits not just individuals but the entire company.” She encourages anyone considering training or a position as an industrial clerk at Bilfinger: “Just apply and see if Bilfinger impresses you too! You’ll find plenty of opportunities here if you’re willing to look.”
