"Occupational safety is
clearly a priority"

Our goal is, of course, to prevent accidents at work."

Mr. Benisch, what brought you to Bilfinger?

“I had previously worked for a number of other companies in R&D and production, and it was time for me to try something new. The service sector was a very interesting option for me. And so I took advantage of the opportunity to join Bilfinger.

What is it exactly that the HSEQ department does every day?

“Generally speaking, HSEQ deals with the health and safety of our employees as well as with all environmental and quality issues that relate to our service delivery. In particular, however, our focus is on occupational safety. This is clearly a priority issue for us, because the health and well-being of our employees is our greatest asset. Our goal is to be an accident-free company, with a healthy and operational team at all times."

Occupational safety is an enormously important topic for Bilfinger. What measures do you use to help ensure a high level of safety at the company?

"Our goal is, of course, to prevent accidents at work. That’s what makes it so important to constantly inform, sensitize and instruct or train our employees about occupational safety. For this reason, we have introduced Safety Posters, workshops and Active Safety Days. At the Active Safety Days, our employees take an active part in comparison to the workshops that are often held elsewhere. The focus here is on the practical portion, as well as on making the subject of safety more comprehensible to employees. There are various stations and modules that the employees complete. This allows us to ensure that what we learn can also be implemented by our colleagues. We want our employees to experience safety and thus also to internalize it.

What has changed in your area as a result of Covid-19?

“The tasks we perform on a daily basis often consist of safety inspections, evaluations, consultations, accident analyses and contact with authorities, suppliers and our customers. Because the pandemic was unexpected, we had first daily and then weekly crisis management meetings. In the beginning, there was a lot of documentation to deal with. Then we provided COVID protection items such as masks, gloves, disinfectants as well as COVID self-tests. We are currently expanding our vaccination infrastructure. We have moved to virtual alternatives for many of our processes because of Corona. We started to carry out virtual inspections in the course of audits or safety walks, for example, using the Bilfinger Virtual Safety Manager. The process is as follows: a colleague is on site at the workshop and the team is connected virtually and can inspect or check it according to our safety standards. This has also allowed us to greatly reduce our CO2 emissions due to travel.”

That sounds like a lot of exciting topics. What do you like most about your job?

“I like the fact that the job can be so exciting and diverse, and that there is never a day that is the same. We provide a foundation for our operating units and advocate for the health and safety of our employees. We are the point of contact for employees, customers and authorities and are in a position to carry out projects all over the world. And the fact that we always work together cross-functionally in the “Bilfinger HSEQ- Community” and always pull together makes our job so interesting.”

What do you personally associate with our slogan “We make it work”?

“We make it work is a major theme for us. To me, it means that we want to achieve the best possible for our customers. We work efficiently and ensure that our customer is the focus of our activities at all times.”

What was a special project that you have fond memories of?

“In 2018, we designed a safety wheel. You could spin the wheel and various simulations around occupational safety are played out with the goal of making safety tangible. In particular, the focus is on what can happen if we don't work with the proper level of protection. It is informative because it highlights the importance of occupational safety in a new way. It shows how quickly workplace accidents can happen and the serious consequences they can have if we are not well prepared. It was remarkable how the wheel was received by our colleagues. The project was so successful that we later presented this to a larger audience at the Management and Leadership Workshop at Bilfinger.

As a result, our customers also see us not just as "maintenance experts" but see us for what we can do and for our HSEQ initiatives!”
