Bilfinger’s climate targets approved by Science Based Targets initiative

  • Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Bilfinger’s science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Bilfinger commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050
  • Commitment to climate protection is anchored in Bilfinger’s strategy to enhance efficiency and sustainability

Mannheim, Germany. Bilfinger has successfully had its corporate targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions validated by the internationally recognized Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The validation confirms that the international industrial services provider has set scientifically sound climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement: The objective is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2050. This commitment underscores Bilfinger’s company-wide sustainability commitment.

The SBTi has officially validated Bilfinger’s near- and long-term climate targets: The reduction targets in the respective scopes conform with the strict SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard. The official confirmation ensures that the climate-related measures Bilfinger has defined to achieve its targets are in line with the latest scientific data.

SBTi has validated the following “Net-Zero Science-Based Targets” from Bilfinger:

  • Overall Net-Zero Target: Bilfinger commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050.
  • Near-Term Targets: Bilfinger commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 58.8% by 2034 from a 2024 base year. Bilfinger also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 35% within the same timeframe.*
  • Long-Term Targets: Bilfinger commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2024 base year. Bilfinger also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% within the same timeframe.* All residual emissions (10%) will be neutralized in line with SBTi criteria to reach net-zero emissions.

“As an international company with over 30,000 employees, we consider it our social responsibility to contribute to climate protection and to a more sustainable future,” says Bilfinger Group CEO Thomas Schulz. “Our vision is to be number one for our customers in enhancing efficiency and sustainability. The SBTi approval is a clear signal that, together with partners, customers and our employees, we want to achieve real, measurable improvements in our own sustainability.”

“We are happy to have met the strict validation criteria. With the external, independent validation of our climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative, we have reached an important milestone as we progress toward greater climate responsibility. This confirms that our carbon footprint and our corporate targets for reducing emissions are in line with the latest findings of climate research and the Paris Agreement,” says Dina Abels, Senior Manager Group Controlling & Sustainability at Bilfinger.

The SBTi standard is considered the world’s leading framework for setting corporate science-based net-zero targets. SBTi provides benchmarks, guidelines and tools for setting greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets. These targets lay out a clearly defined path: They guide how much and how quickly a company must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in order to reduce global warming to 1.5°C.
