What does an apprenticeship as a technical product designer look like?
Justinus Große is completing his apprenticeship as a technical product designer at the Bilfinger site in the German town of Osterode. In this People Story, he talks to us about the impressions he has gathered so far as an apprentice, how he landed his apprenticeship as a technical product designer and his advice for future apprentices.

Justinus’ path to Bilfinger
“After graduating from high school, I really wanted to do something that was both interesting and practical. I was very interested in 3D modeling and so I decided to do an apprenticeship as a technical product designer”, explains Justinus. “A technical product designer uses modern computer programs to create technical drawings, among other things.”
Justinus moved from Brandenburg to Osterode in central Germany for his apprenticeship. “I wanted to take advantage of my high school graduation to become more independent and to explore a new city. Thanks to the warm welcome I received from my colleagues, who were quick to offer me their help from day one, I have been able to take this major step forward with confidence. The annual cross-location apprentice event, where all new apprentices and dual students from across Germany meet, also helped me to quickly settle in and make new contacts.
Steep learning curve and excellent development opportunities
When Justinus sat down for this interview, he was in the first year of his apprenticeship and was delighted with how quickly he had familiarized himself with the complex range of topics. He is especially proud of his first project: “After just a few weeks of learning the basics, I was introduced to the work bit by bit and was able to gain a lot of valuable experience. One of the highlights of my apprenticeship so far was when I was able to complete my first small project independently. This project was then also manufactured in the workshop – something that gave me a real sense of achievement. It’s great to see that I can put what I’ve learned to practical use during my apprenticeship.”
Justinus’ advice for future apprentices
When asked what advice he would give to future apprentices or those who are considering an apprenticeship at Bilfinger, Justinus had this to say: “It is definitely important to have a well-developed ability to visualize three-dimensional spaces. You should be able to work well in a team and have a certain interest and knowledge when it comes to working with computers. If you are open to new things and want to work on exciting projects in a great team, this is the right apprenticeship for you.”
