Heat storage and distribution

Energy companies face the challenge of ensuring a climate-friendly energy supply. With energy demand in the heating sector far greater than in the electricity sector, a successful energy transition requires a robust heat transition. In addition, the irregular availability of renewable energies is leading to changes in the energy market, including the decoupling of energy generation and consumption. Bilfinger can help you expand district heating networks, add heat storage options and support the use of renewable energies in combination with industrial waste heat to ensure a successful energy transition.

Submarkets

Heat generation plants

We plan, deliver, install and commission complete piping systems for all kinds of power plants. This includes geothermal plants, biomass power plants, gas power plants and district heating pumping stations. Our customers are municipal utilities and energy suppliers who appreciate our complete range of services from a single source.

Heat distribution

We supply, lay (and plan) district heating pipelines for all types of systems, nominal sizes, pressure ratings and temperatures. Working as a general contractor or for the pipeline construction trade, our pipeline projects are in cities, fields and mountains. No challenge is too big. We have the necessary approvals (AGFW FW 601) and experience in the construction of

  • Transport lines
  • Steam pipes
  • District heating networks
  • Special structures such as culverts, pipe bridges and tunnel casings

Bilfinger convinced us with a high-quality project concept and a good price-performance ratio."

Andreas GutschekMember of the Management Board of Stadtwerke Duisburg

The plant engineering for our new district cooling center requires a high level of technical expertise. In our major projects we also rely on the support of experienced service providers such as Bilfinger."

Helge-Uve BraunTechnical Managing Director of Stadtwerke München GmbH

Heat accumulator

We can support you during the conceptual design of your heat storage system, contributing our experience from more than 40 heat storage projects at early stages. Working as a general contractor or supplier for individual trades, we offer the following product range:

  • 2-zone accumulators
  • Hedbäck system pressureless accumulators
  • Pressure accumulators
  • Cold storage
  • Steam accumulators

Use of waste heat

The use of waste heat from industrial processes, power plants, wastewater from sewage treatment plants and even seawater is a decisive factor in the energy transition. We support municipal utilities and district heating suppliers. As your EPC partner, we can supply large-scale heat pump systems, including systems with a combination of heat storage.

Bad-Actor-Analysis (Münzing)

Using a bad actor analysis, unusually high energy consumption can be identified quickly. This requires the merging the data from energy meters with production and operating data. Bilfinger developed a solution for Münzing Chemie that intelligently links the relevant data and immediately displays major deviations from average values on a dashboard.

Construction of a heat-pump system (Heineken)

To increase energy efficiency through the use of waste heat, Dutch brewery group Heineken built a 9 MW hot water heat pump system. Bilfinger was responsible for conducting feasibility studies and a modeling study (waste heat supply versus heat demand) as well as for the concept design and the basic design, including specifications and supplier evaluation.

Smart heat network for a sustainable future (Enpuls)

Bilfinger developed a concept for an intelligent heating network for Dutch environmental service provider Enpuls. The core components of the concept include solar thermal collectors and a thermal accumulator. Bilfinger was responsible for the concept design, basic routing of the heating network and the dynamic system modeling, among other things. Bilfinger also designed the pump station.

Less CO2 with circular district heating system (050 Buurtwarmte)

In the Dutch city of Groningen, Bilfinger is working on a circular district heating system in cooperation with the organization 050 Buurtwarmte. Using high-temperature heat pumps, the project will significantly reduce the CO2 footprint of the Groningen's Paddepoel district. Bilfinger was responsible for the concept design and advised the organization on safety, noise, air and permits.
