Bilfinger Tebodin provides a technical feasibility design for sustainable healthcare
A new EU-funded project – KitNewCare – aims to help health and care systems better embrace environmental sustainability and climate-neutrality, with a focus on kidney care. At the heart of this initiative is a pressing issue: healthcare systems are significant contributors to carbon emissions, accounting for approximately 5-11% of the total at global level. Within this context, kidney care emerges as an ideal candidate for systemic change due to its substantial disease burden, resource footprint and well-defined care pathways and ecosystem.

To start, experts from Bilfinger Tebodin will organize workshops with stakeholders to discuss and conclude on sustainability aspects to take into account, such as energy use, water use and purification, waste management and circular design principles. The result of these workshops, together with our Pit Stop sessions, will be a high-level design overview with insight into the environmental impact of different design options. Together with the KitNewCare partners in the health care sector, we will choose the overall most sustainable solutions from an integrated perspective. Consultants and engineers from Bilfinger Tebodin will then use these decisions to provide the initial technical feasibility design for a sustainable kidney dialysis center with low environmental impact. This then is the start for practical testing sites of these solutions at the KitNewCare healthcare partners.
