We’ve just completed a major project on the Oseberg field, where we removed deck coating and applied zinc ethyl silicate paint across 800 m² of the cargo deck – with impressive results.
Through close and effective collaboration with DF Rental, Derc Salotech, and Hummervoll, we deployed advanced robotic technology that significantly enhanced efficiency, HSE, and quality throughout the operation.
To make the most of the available time window, we implemented two shifts: a standard day shift (07:00–19:00) and a staggered shift (11:00–23:00). This setup proved highly effective, allowing us to complete the entire job without any planned overtime.
We used a multi-unit platform equipped with:
- 500 and 2,000 bar lances
- Derc MagTrack (2,500 bar) – a modular magnetic robot enabling parallel activities
- Blast arm and Hummervoll Blastrac with skilled operators
After UHP removal of the deck coating, the surface was sandblasted and immediately coated with Carbozinc 11. The entire process was streamlined and executed with high precision thanks to the robotic equipment.
Next-generation workforce
A highlight of this project was the contribution from our apprentices. Many of them grew up with game controllers and joysticks – and quickly adapted to the joystick-based robotic tools. This clearly shows the value of combining new technology with a new generation of skilled workers.
Future projects and progress
Two new jobs are coming up, each with its own UHP unit, to be executed during a drilling shutdown. These will cover areas of 150 m² and 300 m² respectively. After that, three more large areas are scheduled. And we’re not stopping there – in early July, Pipeliner will arrive with a custom-built robot for sandblasting inside a drinking water tank set for full renovation. We’re excited to see how it performs compared to the UHP technology we’ve used so far.
This project clearly demonstrates that robotic technology has a natural and forward-looking role offshore. We’re achieving greater efficiency, improved HSE, and opening the door to new ways of working – especially for the next generation. Oseberg is stepping into the future, and we’re proud to be part of the journey.
