Motorway network in Hungary expanded

March 31, 2010

Bilfinger Berger has completed construction of the 65-kilometer long middle section of the M6 motorway in Hungary in the record time of just 18 months. The speed with which the project was realized shows the efficiency of public private partnerships.

The new section of the motorway has an investment volume of about €500 million. Bilfinger Berger holds a share of 45 percent in the project company. In addition, Austrian contractor Porr holds 45 percent and French motorway operator Egis has a 10 percent stake. Bilfinger Berger’s equity commitments amount to €23 million. During the 28-year operating phase, the project company ensures the availability of the new motorway in return for contractually-fixed payments from the Hungarian state.

The M6 is a key element in the expansion of Hungary’s motorway network. In 2006, Bilfinger Berger had already completed an initial 58-kilometer section of the M6 – also in just 20 months. That section went into operation in 2006 and was also based on an availability model. The total investment volume for road projects in Hungary in which Bilfinger Berger is involved amounts to about €1 billion.
