Order with a volume of €460 million: Bilfinger Berger to modernize Europe’s largest lignite-fired power plant

Bilfinger Berger has won a major order worth over €460 million for the modernization of the largest lignite-fired power plant in Europe. Bilfinger Berger Power Services will replace the lignite-fired steam generators for six power plant blocks in the Polish city of Belchatow. The measure ensures, with the help of state-of-the-art technology, that the plant conforms to the European Union's stricter environmental standards. The conversion will substantially reduce emissions, clearly improve efficiency and availability at the 4,400 MW power plant and extend its service life by a further 30 years.

With this order, the operating company, PGE, builds on an established and successful cooperation: Bilfinger Berger is already responsible for the modernization of three additional boilers and is also fitting two power plant blocks with residual heat systems. As part of the new order, the Company will design, manufacture and assemble the modernized firing, pressure parts and associated systems such as the grinding plant, boilers, ventilation and dust ducts. The project will be implemented in stages, while the remaining blocks are still in operation, over a period of 70 months.

The modernization and expansion of conventional power plants is among the core competences of Bilfinger Berger Power Services. The focus is on sophisticated measures for increasing the service life and efficiency of the plant. The Company is thus making an important contribution to the renewal of the European power plants as well as to the reduction of environmentally damaging emissions.
