When the need for educators arose, Jonny Jonsson, department manager for insulation in Sundsvall at Bilfinger, stepped in to support IF-Skolan – the industry school for technical insulation. During the autumn, he has passionately trained apprentices in several locations. A mission that not only strengthens Bilfinger but the entire industry.
From manager to educator – an important mission
"I have a background in vocational education, so it felt natural to take on this role at short notice," Jonny explains. It was an intense autumn but also very rewarding.
To carry out the assignment, Jonny took a leave of absence from Bilfinger during the weeks the school needed his help.
"There were some practical challenges, but we solved them. I find it incredibly enjoyable to teach, and the industry really needs this school."
The structure of training
The training has primarily focused on practical elements, but Jonny sees a need to complement it with more theory in the future.
"The challenge is that participants are at different levels. The goal is to build competence, not just knowledge – the difference between being able to insulate and understanding why you insulate," he says.
During the autumn, Jonny has conducted training sessions in Malmö, Örnsköldsvik, and Stenungsund. The next stop will be Gimo.
"The conditions vary between locations, but I always try to make the best of what is available," says Jonny.
Feedback and reflection
The most rewarding aspect for Jonny is when participants leave the course week with a feeling that they have truly understood the content.
"That’s the best feedback you can get," he says.
Jonny is convinced that IF-Skolan is crucial for the future of the industry.
"The school is essential for us to continue recruiting and retaining competence. Bilfinger contributes many students, but the responsibility lies with the entire industry. We need to bring forward more people who are interested and driven."
What does this mean for Bilfinger?
"For Bilfinger, it’s about more than meeting today’s needs. It’s an investment in the future. We want to be an attractive employer and ensure that we have the right competence to meet customer demands. Education is the key to recruiting and retaining skilled professionals," Jonny concludes.
