- Bilfinger to manage realization of major chemical and fertilizer plant in Aswan, Egypt
- Representing Egyptian Chemical Industries (KIMA) across all engineering, procurement and construction stages
- New plant expected to produce 600 tons of nitric acid per day, which will be transformed into 800 tons of granulated ammonium nitrate in fertilizer quality, enabling farmers to increase yield of their crops
Bilfinger, a global industrial services provider, is expanding their business operations in Egypt: The company was awarded a significant Project Management and Consultancy (PMC) contract by Egyptian Chemical Industries (KIMA). KIMA’s goal is to install a new chemical and fertilizer plant at their existing site in the city of Aswan. With an expected production of 600 tons of nitric acid per day, the new plant is going to significantly increase their local production capabilities.
“As a worldwide exporter of chemical products, this new plant is crucial for growing our production capabilities in Aswan,” indicates Abdel Meguid Heguazi, CEO of KIMA. “By the end of 2027, it will allow us to produce 800 tons of granulated ammonium nitrate in fertilizer quality per day, which will be delivered to clients locally and around the world. We trust that Bilfinger will be the perfect solution partner to represent us in all project phases along the way and to make sure that we meet our targets most efficiently.”
Following the signing on August 12, Bilfinger’s branch in the Middle East has allocated a regional team of specialized engineers to provide independent design review and site supervision services and to ensure that the third-party contractor consortium in place fulfils its obligations according to KIMA’s high expectations. As their PMC contractor, Bilfinger will thus be representing their client across all engineering, procurement and construction stages of the project, including pre-commissioning, commissioning and performance testing.
The collaboration is an important milestone to Bilfinger Middle East on the way to expanding the business operations in Egypt: KIMA is a listed, state-controlled producer of nitrogen-based fertilizers and chemicals with a company history of almost 70 years, now looking to increase its production capabilities through a $300 million project. In 2024, the company was listed among Egypt’s top 50 companies.
“With KIMA, we are significantly expanding our involvement in Egypt and the region’s promising chemical industry. For this collaboration, we can build upon our deep engineering expertise gained with clients across industries in the Middle East. KIMA can expect the high standards we have set ourselves in line with our vision at Bilfinger to become the number one partner in enhancing efficiency and sustainability,” says Christian Rugland, President Engineering & Maintenance International at Bilfinger.
Bilfinger is contributing with extensive experience, gained through decades of concept, basic, detail and process engineering as well as PMC and construction site management services for clients in the Energy, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Pharma & Biopharma and Oil & Gas industries. Throughout KIMA’s nitric acid and ammonium nitrate project, Bilfinger will steer the third-party contractor consortium across countries, due to different project phases taking place in both Mumbai, India, and on site in Aswan, Egypt.
