Public-private partnership: Bilfinger Berger to modernize and operate schools in Hof

Bilfinger Berger will modernize four schools in the district of Hof in Bavaria on the basis of a public-private partnership, and will subsequently operate the schools for a period of 21 years. The project includes the modernization and expansion of three existing schools as well as the construction of a new school center. Investment volume amounts to more than €50 million and the financing does not require any equity contribution from the Bilfinger Berger Group.

The importance of public-private partnerships (PPP) in the German building construction sector has grown steadily in recent years. Increasing financial pressure on public-sector budgets and the efficiency advantages compared with more conventional approaches means that this procurement model will be used more and more in the future.

Bilfinger Berger already operates a number of schools and administrative buildings in Germany. One of the Group’s projects is the Burg Prison near Magdeburg, which will go into operation in April 2009 as the first PPP prison in Germany. And in Kiel, a cancer therapy center is being built, with which Bilfinger Berger has now extended its concessions activities to the German health care sector. Outside Germany, the Group is already an established partner for PPP projects with clients in the public sector, particularly in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.
