Major order with a volume of €510 million in Australia:
Bilfinger Berger to widen Ipswich Motorway near Brisbane

Bilfinger Berger is benefiting from the Australian government’s ongoing high levels of investment in the country’s transport infrastructure. The subsidiary Abigroup has now received an order to widen the Ipswich Motorway southwest of Brisbane from four to six lanes over a length of eight kilometers. The order includes the reconstruction of motorway intersections and the construction of 31 new bridges. Total project volume amounts to €800 million, of which €510 million is accounted for by Bilfinger Berger. The rest will be shared by engineering consultants and regional construction companies. Completion is planned for 2013.

The widening of the Ipswich Motorway is part of an infrastructure program and will be carried out on the basis of an alliance model. This form of contracting provides an alternative delivery model for major public-sector projects in Australia as it offers a number of advantages compared with conventional procedures. Client and contractor collaborate as early as the design phase in order to define all details of the construction work and to set the cost framework. This model is based on a cooperative approach and features a well balanced risk structure.

In Australia, stable demand from the public sector constitutes a counterweight to the decline in commercial construction. Supported by infrastructure investment, Bilfinger Berger’s construction business continues to develop well in this market.
