Dr. Christian Roth passes away at the age of 77

On June 9, 2011 Dr. Christian Roth, who was Chairman of the Executive Board at Bilfinger Berger for many years, passed away at the age of 77.

Christian Roth was born on December 29, 1933 in Gleiwitz, Schlesien. From 1953 to 1957 he studied civil engineering at the Technical University in Karlsruhe. He joined Grün & Bilfinger AG in 1958, was named deputy member of the Executive Board in 1972 and full member in 1973. Christian Roth contributed substantially to the successful merger of Grün & Bilfinger AG and Julius Berger-Bauboag AG to Bilfinger Berger Bauaktiengesellschaft in 1975. He was Chairman of the Executive Board at Bilfinger Berger from 1984 to 1998.

Christian Roth played a key role in shaping the development of Group. He created a strong foundation for the further corporate development at Bilfinger Berger, primarily through the internationalization of its activities. After leaving the operational side of the business, he joined the Company’s Supervisory Board and remained a member until June 2003.

Dr. Christian Roth was President of the German Construction Industry Association from 1993 to 1996. His time in office was marked by the consequences of German reunification and the opening of Central and Eastern Europe. Dr. Christian Roth helped create international assignment regulations to protect the domestic construction market from the unfair competition from European low-wage providers. In terms of economic policy, his early advocacy of privately-financed solutions for public-sector infrastructure was very important

The School of Civil Engineering and Surveying at the Technical University in Munich awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1991. In 1993, his efforts in the integration of the East and West German construction industries and his commitment to improving the competitiveness of the German construction industry were recognized with the awarding of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Christian Roth retained his ties to Bilfinger Berger in recent years and followed the development of the company with great interest. The Supervisory Board, Executive Board and employees of Bilfinger Berger will honor the memory of Christian Roth.
