Bilfinger Berger to build new correctional facility in Düsseldorf

Bilfinger Berger, the construction and services Group, is to build a new correctional facility in Düsseldorf for the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia. The order has a volume of €120 million. The prison, with space for 850 inmates, will be put into operation in the fall of 2011 and will replace existing facilities which can no longer meet current demand.

The correctional facility consists of seven building complexes with a total floor space of 70,000 square meters. The new structure expands existing capacities and allows for the prison cells to be enlarged. Workshops to improve the range of jobs on offer and areas where the inmates can exercise and socialize will also be built.

Bilfinger Berger has worked out a concept for the energy supply which, compared to conventional technologies, will reduce the cost of energy and maintenance by 20 percent. A combined heat and power unit (CHP) with gas boilers simultaneously generates heat and electricity, resulting in particularly high levels of efficiency. With its comprehensive approach to design, construction and operation, Bilfinger Berger is making a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The Group has a wealth of experience in the construction and operation of prisons. Since the beginning of May, in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Company has been operating one of the country’s first correctional facilities to be carried out by the private sector. In the Australian state of Victoria, Bilfinger Berger completed two prisons on a public private partnership basis. Currently, the construction and services Group is also building an additional correctional facility in the state of Queensland.
