Bilfinger Supports SkyNRG as Owner’s Engineer in Realizing Sustainable Aviation Fuel Plant

Bilfinger is supporting SkyNRG as Owner’s Engineer with the development of their first large-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility, DSL-01, currently under construction at Chemie Park Delfzijl in Groningen, the Netherlands. The project marks an important step in scaling-up sustainable aviation solutions and reducing the environmental impact of air travel.

Construction of the new plant started in February 2026 after financial close and permitting were secured. Once operational, the facility will produce approximately 100,000 tonnes of SAF annually. The plant uses the Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) pathway to convert residual fats and greases into SAF, contributing to a greenhouse gas emission reduction of around 80% compared to conventional fossil jet fuel.

Working as an integrated team

Bilfinger is closely involved in this project as Owner’s Engineer and provides Project Management Consultancy (PMC) support as part of an integrated team with SkyNRG and EPC contractor Technip. Working together at the same location, the team ensures close collaboration and efficient project execution.

From the start of the project, Bilfinger established the full project execution framework, including procedures, cost control, scheduling and monthly reporting, and developed a project dashboard. This dashboard enables transparent project monitoring and supports efficient, data-driven decision-making. The processes are continuously maintained and optimized to ensure consistent delivery. In addition, Bilfinger manages 12 OSBL subprojects covering utilities such as gas, water, steam and data connections.

By setting up this structured way of working and a robust project execution framework, Bilfinger enables SkyNRG to efficiently manage this project and future developments. Ongoing knowledge transfer ensures that SkyNRG can increasingly take ownership as the project progresses.
