Thor Medical’s production facility at Herøya Industrial Park has been mechanically completed. All equipment has been installed, and the project has been handed over to the owner for commissioning. Bilfinger Engineering & Projects has held overall responsibility for the project under an EPCM contract.
“We have been responsible for engineering, procurement, and for managing the installation in close cooperation with subcontractors,” says Project Manager Sven Halvorsen. “Throughout the project period, our team has consisted of between 10 and 15 employees.”
The process plant, named AlphaOne, is Thor Medical’s first commercial facility for refining thorium for use in cancer treatment. The milestone was marked with cake and a few short speeches on April 21.
An EPCM contract means that Bilfinger has been responsible for the design, procurement, and construction of the production equipment.
Outstanding Effort
“This is a major milestone for the project,” said Brede Ellingsæter when the team marked the completion of the mechanical works. Ellingsæter is Chief Operating and Financial Officer at Thor Medical and the project owner for AlphaOne. “Bilfinger and the subcontractors have delivered an outstanding effort. We have operated under an ambitious timeline. The investment decision was taken at the end of March last year, with the goal of completing the facility in just over one year. We succeeded—not least because our partners have embraced the challenges head-on, and the collaboration has been excellent.”
Hope for Cancer Patients

The project manager concluded by saying that everyone involved in the project can take pride in delivering a strong result. “We have delivered a solution that will stand the test of time. We wish Thor Medical every success with the commissioning phase, and we look forward to the construction of the next facility.”
