European nuclear industry relies on Bilfinger

  • Bilfinger wins waste treatment orders worth a total of about €30 million
  • Order for waste treatment unit in the Hinkley Point C reactor
  • System design order for an encapsulation plant in Sweden

The European nuclear industry is relying on Bilfinger’s competences and has awarded two major orders with a total volume of about €30 million to the company. Bilfinger subsidiary Babcock Noell will deliver a nuclear waste treatment unit for the new British reactor Hinkley Point C. The client is EDF Energy, working in partnership with CGN. For the Swedish nuclear fuel and waste management company SKB, Bilfinger is participating in the system design of a planned encapsulation plant at the Oskarshamn location for the storage of spent nuclear fuel. The two orders are carried out in the Bilfinger segment Engineering & Technologies (E&T).

Tom Blades, Chief Executive Officer at Bilfinger SE: “We are an acknowledged partner in the nuclear field with decades of experience and broad technological know-how covering the entire lifecycle of a nuclear power plant. Customers also value our expertise in the treatment of nuclear waste. With our technology, we help reduce the volume of nuclear waste – that saves space and money.”

In the United Kingdom, the company is designing and building a waste treatment center for the new Hinkley Point C reactor that will be responsible for managing and treating radioactive waste generated in ongoing operations. The objective is to condition the waste safely and in a space-saving manner. The order that was received in Sweden covers the development of a system design for the main process of the encapsulation plant as well as the support of SKB and other companies involved in the project.

Bilfinger has been active in the areas of nuclear service and nuclear technology for many decades. The range of services covers development, design, delivery and commissioning through to operation of the delivered units and their fixtures. The range of Würzburg-based subsidiary Babcock Noell addresses the construction of nuclear power stations as well as modernization and decommissioning. The company played a leading role in the first decommissioning of a commercially used nuclear power plant in Germany in Niederaichbach. Bilfinger is also a leading supplier of special machines for the treatment of radioactive waste.
