Bilfinger wins multi-million euro contracts from aluminum industry in Norway

  • pilot plant for high-efficiency production at Hydro
  • framework agreement with Alcoa

Bilfinger has won an order from aluminum company Hydro for the installation of 60 electrolytic cells at the Hydro technology pilot plant at the Karmøy location in Norway. The order volume amounts to approximately €27 million.

Through the pilot plant, Hydro aims to make the world’s most energy-efficient technology for aluminum production ready for series-production. The target is to reduce energy consumption and thus the CO2 footprint by 15 percent.

“Bilfinger and Hydro have been partners for many years. With this pilot project, we can actively help pave the way to climate-friendly industrial production. Our employees will contribute their extensive expertise in this sector”, says Tom Blades, CEO at Bilfinger SE.

The order which will be carried out in the Bilfinger Industrial Maintenance division comprises the installation of a complete busbar system, the installation of 60 cathode shells and anode superstructures, lining of the cathode shells, supply of the anode hangers as well as other equipment. The work is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2017.

Framework contract with Alcoa extended
Another success in Norway was secured by Bilfinger with aluminum production copany Alcoa with the extension of a framework agreement for the Mosjøen location. Here, Bilfinger will be responsible for the maintenance of the aluminum smelter for another three years. The plant produces around 190,000 tons of aluminum per year.

The scope of work of the framework agreement represents approximately 100 man-years. Services provided by Bilfinger include maintenance, modifications and turnarounds with a focus on electrical engineering, automation technology, mechanical engineering, insulation, scaffolding as well as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. The decisive factor for the contract award was the excellent performance in the area of safety, among other things.
