Key Components of the Net Zero Approach

The Net Zero Approach is a comprehensive solution developed by Bilfinger to address the complex challenges associated with achieving net zero operations. It consists of three main phases:

Development of a Net Zero Roadmap

We work closely with our customers to develop a customized roadmap outlining the steps needed to achieve Net Zero operations. This phase involves assessing current operations, setting sustainability goals and identifying key measures to be implemented. These measures are designed at feasibility level (+/- 40%) and prioritized in a timeline, resulting in the final output: the roadmap.

Design & Build

Once the roadmap is established, our team of experts design tailored measures to address energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and operational optimization. These measures are then implemented on site.

Operate & Maintain

Our maintenance and asset management services ensure optimal efficiency of the implemented systems during operation. This includes monitoring of measures during operation.

En‑ROADS – A powerful climate simulator for sustainable solutions

At Bilfinger, we strive to integrate innovative and sustainable solutions into our operations. One of the tools that supports us in this effort is the En‑ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator. This tool has enriched our perspective on climate change and offers a hopeful pathway toward a more sustainable future.

What is En‑ROADS?

En‑ROADS is an online simulation tool for testing and exploring climate solutions. It was developed by Climate Interactive, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Ventana Systems. Policymakers, educators, businesses, the media, and the general public can use this powerful simulator to examine the impact of dozens of policy measures. Examples include electrifying transport, putting a price on carbon, and improving agricultural practices. The simulator takes into account hundreds of factors, including energy prices, temperature, air quality, and sea-level rise. The model is freely accessible via the Climate Interactive website, where free training courses are also available. By using the tool, anyone can gain insight into the parameters that influence climate change.

How does En‑ROADS work?

En‑ROADS is based on system dynamics and draws on the best available science. The model has been calibrated using a wide range of existing integrated assessment, climate, and energy models. It runs on a standard laptop and is available in more than a dozen languages. Users can quickly visualize the long-term effects of global climate policies and actions. The goal? To cut through the noise and equip government officials, business leaders, and others with the knowledge they need to implement fair and effective climate solutions.

Our role and connection to Sustainability in Asset Management (SiAM)

Within Bilfinger, we see En‑ROADS as a valuable tool for developing sustainable industrial asset management strategies. When clients want to make specific contributions to mitigating climate change, En‑ROADS can be used to raise awareness of the impact of various policy measures and actions. Subsequently, through our Net Zero Approach solution, we can help them take concrete steps and achieve their goals. By using the simulator, we can explore scenarios such as investing in renewable energy sources, promoting energy efficiency, and reducing emissions. These insights help us make well‑informed decisions and further develop our Net Zero Approach offering.
