Preem
Nordic Mechanical has carried out one of the biggest turnaround shutdowns ever at Preem’s refinery in Lysekil. Nordic Mechanical’s scope included everything from piping and mechanical work, electrical and instrumentation services, to cleaning, painting and blasting. The shutdown was completed on time, with zero reported incidents.
Together with other suppliers, we have carried out one of the largest industrial shutdowns in Sweden. A maintenance shutdown requires meticulous planning and streamlined execution under intense time pressure — everything happens at once. Extremely high safety requirements apply, leaving no room for unexpected events.
In complex projects like this, we must always anticipate and prepare for the unexpected. We need to identify potential problems and obstacles before they arise and plan how to resolve them in order to deliver our solutions quickly. The Lysekil refinery shutdown is one of the most successful ever completed in terms of quality, safety and collaboration. During this project, the workforce was expanded compared to previous shutdowns. Both Preem’s shutdown organization and the contractors staffed the project with more personnel, which has shown very positive results, says Conny Andersson, Project Manager.
Everything is connected – we are involved throughout the entire project, before, during and after.
Due to regulatory requirements, refinery units must be shut down every six years for a full turnaround, during which production must be completely stopped. Between these major shutdowns, smaller parts of the plant are stopped at more frequent intervals. Maintenance shutdowns require thorough planning — each part of the facility must be taken offline. Machines, furnaces and vessels must be inspected, sometimes replaced, and maintained to ensure high efficiency and safety.
