Bilfinger Heat Treatment Services delivers controlled heating and cooling processes that act on the microstructure of metals and alloys to produce desired material properties. Pre-Weld Heat Treatment

Preheat is the application of heat to metal components prior to and during welding. Our pre-weld heat treatment services limit the risk of cracking, reduce residual stresses after welding, and minimize hydrogen absorption into the weld seam. Preheat temperatures typically range from 50°C to 250°C, depending on material type and thickness.
Different alloys require specific preheat temperatures: carbon steels may require 20–80°C, while chrome-molybdenum alloys (P11, P22, P91) require temperatures of 200–300°C. Our technicians monitor and adjust interpass temperatures throughout the welding process to ensure compliance with construction requirements and material specifications.

Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)

Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) heats the entire weld to temperatures high enough to reduce residual stresses within the weld zone. PWHT temperatures typically range from 580–760°C, depending on material grade and application. The process eliminates brittle hardness caused by rapid cooling during welding, reduces internal stresses, and achieves desired mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, and workability.

We apply various heating methods based on fabrication geometry, size, and site constraints—from locally applied electrical resistance heaters to larger gas-fired furnaces. The result: extended asset life, improved structural integrity, and reduced risk of crack formation.
 

Additional Thermal Processes 

Bilfinger performs a comprehensive range of specialized heat treatment processes to meet diverse industrial requirements:

  • Hydrogen Bake-Out: Carried out immediately after welding at 350–400°C to release hydrogen and prevent hydrogen cracking
  • Stress Relieving: Reduces harmful internal stresses while maintaining material hardness and serviceability
  • Annealing: Heats steels above transformation temperature (1000–1150°C for stainless steels) with controlled cooling to improve ductility and corrosion resistance
  • Normalizing: Heating to approximately 900°C followed by air cooling improves grain structure and reduces hardness
  • Quench Hardening: Rapid cooling in air, water, or oil to achieve desired hardness properties
     

Induction Heat Treatment

Induction heating offers an efficient alternative to electrical resistance heating for both preheat and post-weld heat treatment applications. This technique uses electromagnetism to generate heat directly within the component through coils mounted on the outside of the insulation—the coils themselves remain cool during the process.

Key advantages of induction heating include rapid heating rates ideal for thermal expansion applications such as shrink-fitting bushings onto shafts or loosening seized bolts. Additional benefits include shorter installation and removal times, lower energy consumption, reduced ambient temperatures (particularly beneficial in confined spaces), and safer working conditions compared to hot ceramic heating elements.

Refractory Dry-Out Services 

Our refractory dry-out services ensure optimal properties of refractory linings within vessels, furnaces, and pipeline structures. Controlled heating and ventilating operations carefully remove moisture to prevent disruption from steam generation during operation - a failure that can result in high associated costs and equipment damage.

Using state-of-the-art equipment including high velocity gas burners, digital process controllers, and fully proportional electronic fuel actuators, we circulate large volumes of combusted gases at closely controlled temperatures. Services can be performed locally for smaller repairs or integrally using specialized equipment, allowing faster startup without waiting for all mechanical work to complete.

Digital recording provides professional, faster, and qualitatively superior reports that can be digitally archived. Reports include clear documentation with graphs displaying both setpoints and actual measured values, heat treatment declarations, and complete traceability from client data input through execution.
