My name is Daniela Karlsson, and I have been working at Bilfinger for eight years. Originally, I was working as a personnel manager, but today I am working as an HR and HSEQ manager.
HSEQ stands for Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality. My responsibilities cover various dimensions of employee wellbeing and safety, monitored through measurements and practices. My work combines compliance with laws and regulations and achieving Bilfinger Group’s goals and expectations.
In today's operating environment, project complexity is increasing, and schedules can be tight. Therefore, quality and traceability of work are key success factors for project success. For us, safety is always the starting point of our work; it enables efficient implementation, minimizes disruptions, and supports predictable project management.
Health mainly includes occupational health and overall wellbeing at work. This area is clear in HSEQ, but an important one. Since wellbeing is essential for resilience and performance both in our work and free time. Preventive work guides us; we work closely together in occupational health and work ability management of superiors. We care about our employees’ well-being. We offer wide occupational health services for our employees. In addition, we create wellbeing and health related campaigns regularly. We care about the well-being of our personnel. Well-being supports success at work and creates a safe working environment.
Safety may sound simple, but implementing and ensuring safety is a broader concept; it includes anticipation, assessment, and monitoring.
Safety arises from multiple dimensions. We follow all safety requirements with equal importance: legal regulations, local rules, customer safety rules, and Bilfinger’s own safety rules. Together, with the customer we are building safety working environment. Safety is built together with our customers through collaboration and shared responsibility.
At Bilfinger, we operate in the service industry, supporting customers with our expertise across diverse sectors. Safety practices vary greatly between environments, for example, a new factory versus a maintenance shutdown. We adapt to the situation and take the specific characteristics of the site into account for risk assessment. We have operated in various environments and know how to adapt and always take the working environment into account.
We strive to create safety-centric working practices and encourage intervention when unsafe work is observed.
Building a safety culture through action
We use proactive safety measures and routines, such as risk assessments, HSEQ plans and observation tours on sites, Safety Moments, Think First! -analysis and safety observations.
Safety Moments are kept weekly, and it is a good opportunity to share client information. Last-minute risk assessments called Think First! which is now available in digital form.
Last year, we enhanced interactive safety communication. We aim to communicate actively about occupational safety at all levels. With communication we aim to strengthen occupational safety, which is based on openness, trust, and courage to work correctly and safely. We want to know if there are any safety concerns in the field. We have the STOP AUTHORITY policy, empowering anyone to stop work if risks arise. This unites us in creating a safe workplace.
Key safety metrics:
- LTI (Lost Time Injury) has been zero since 2016 in Finland, and in Bilfinger group 0.18.
- TRIF (Total Recordable Incident Frequency): 0 per million working hours (2025), when Bilfinger group was 0.98.
Safety thinking has evolved toward Safety Leadership, placing people at the center. People enable safety by preventing, anticipating, and identifying risks. Safety attitudes have always been a priority at Bilfinger.
