Bilfinger integrates pioneering democracy education program into its vocational training
Interactive formats foster democratic values, social responsibility and self-awareness
Demonstrating support for Germany as an industrial location and for social commitment
Mannheim, Germany. International industrial services provider Bilfinger is taking a very clear stance: Democratic values and social skills are an integral part of the education of tomorrow. Beginning this year, Bilfinger is introducing an innovative democracy education program that not only prepares its apprentices for careers in industry, but also for their important role as members of society. The initiative makes Bilfinger a pioneer among companies that provide apprenticeships in Germany.
Around 150 Bilfinger trainees in Germany are the first to take part in the unique program, which uses interactive formats to prepare them for their role in a diverse and digital world. At the heart of this new democracy education program is a hands-on, entertaining introduction to the topic, designed to teach young people about the relevance of fundamental democratic values for society and economic life. The module is becoming an integral part of vocational training and is implemented in all apprenticeships throughout Germany. With this program, Bilfinger is also making a clear commitment to Germany as an industrial location.
“Democratic values and social responsibility are the foundation of a strong economy and a dynamic society”, says Thomas Schulz, Bilfinger Group CEO. “With our democracy education program, we are actively preparing young people not only for their professional future, but also for their role as engaged members of our society. This strengthens Germany as an industrial location.”
The program kicked off in Gelsenkirchen at the beginning of November. The apprentices were introduced to the topic for the first time with an interactive experiential theater performance. Discussions, workshops, and seminars further explore the content and accompany the young talents throughout their entire apprenticeship. A special focus is also placed on the sensible use of social media.
“The kickoff was a complete success. We were impressed to see how committed and thoughtful our apprentices already are,” says Michael Weißenberg, Apprenticeship Supervisor at Bilfinger Engineering & Maintenance DACH. “We are demonstrating that vocational training at Bilfinger is more than just specialist knowledge – it represents a contribution to society. Through active participation, our apprentices experience how they themselves can make a difference and show solidarity with others in society – whether in youth and apprentice representation, on the works council, in associations or in local politics. Together, we are helping to shape a future in which democratic values and social responsibility form the basis for success and solidarity.”
Bilfinger’s main vocational training organization in Germany, Bilfinger education GmbH, plays a key role in training future talent. The company is setting new standards in vocational training and emphasizing its commitment to the development of skilled workers. Bilfinger employs around 300 apprentices at over 30 locations in Germany and provides vocational training in 26 professions, primarily in the skilled trades and technology. This ensures comprehensive, high-quality vocational training.
