Ben Ward, Contract Lead

I would highly recommend a role with Bilfinger, as most people never leave – I have just completed 10 years on-site!"
1. What does your role involve day-to-day?
I normally arrive on site around 6am, with my senior team normally not far behind me. We have a quick discussion with regards to what the day ahead holds, along with some crumpets and hot drinks. I then complete a site diary, which details where every person will be working, what vehicles are required, who will be driving them, if there are any confined space rescues happening, who is part of the team, sickness, holidays, safety and anything else that could or has happened throughout the day. I then hold the morning safety meeting with the whole team (including sub-contractors), the client issues a daily brief which details any safety events from the previous day, along with any relevant messages. I will deliver this along with any relevant Bilfinger messages. This is normally well received by the team. I try my best to get out on-site each day, even if it’s for 10 minutes. I feel this is good for the personnel on-site to be able to interact and feedback any issues they might have, or anything positive they want to share with me. As the day closes, I will pop go see the team whilst they are handing in their packs to the supervision, then at 4pm myself and my senior team hold an end of day meeting to discuss the day’s events, and what tomorrow might look like.
2. How do you collaborate with the client and your Bilfinger team?
I work very closely with the client as we share a large office and have a great working relationship, which is partly why Bilfinger has successfully held the contract on-site for 15 years! Like all good relationships, we have our disagreements, but we are both big believers that we address any issues straight away and find a way forward together. This ethos is how I communicate with my team on-site as well.
3. What’s been a standout moment in your time during your time at Bilfinger?
The biggest moment for me has to be an incident on-site a few years ago, although this was not ideal for the client, how my on-call pollution teams, and the rest of the site team responded to the incident was simply incredible. The care, professionalism and delivery were second to none and came with the highest praise from our client and Bilfinger senior management. It was a very worrying time for everyone, as the site had the potential to be closed because of the seriousness of the event. But everyone remained professional and put any worry to one side.
4. How does Bilfinger support your development in your role?
I have always said that my line manager and regional director have always, and continue to, give me the support I need whenever I need it, and give me every opportunity to further my development.
5. What would you say to someone considering a role at Bilfinger on a client site?
Everyone says you are so lucky to work where you do, and we are, we work in an area of outstanding natural beauty, and we get treated very fairly by our client. Therefore, I would highly recommend a role with Bilfinger, as most people never leave – I have just completed 10 years on-site!
