March 25, 2015
The engineering and services group Bilfinger has won the order to modernize a part of the Prora architectural monument on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen and to convert it into 280 premium holiday apartments. The volume amounts to €30 million, the client is Wohnen in Prora Vermögensverwaltungs GmbH & Co. KG in Berlin.
Construction of the more than four-kilometer long holiday complex was begun in the 1930's as part of the National Socialist 'strength through joy' program. Later, the six-floor complex of buildings located directly on the coast was used by the National People's Army and the German Armed Forces. Bilfinger will now fully modernize one of the nine structural blocks. Private condominiums and hotel apartments will be built over a total floor space of 24,000 square meters. Modernization work will begin in March 2015 and will be completed in the third quarter of 2016.
