Bilfinger Berger awarded billion-euro contract in Qatar:
In Doha, a new residential district for 20,000 inhabitants will be built in record time

Bilfinger Berger has received one of the largest orders in its corporate history: in Doha, Qatar, the company will build a new residential district for more than 20,000 inhabitants. The project, with a volume of about €1 billion, includes all infrastructure and turnkey construction of nearly 6,000 residential units.

Persian Gulf states are benefiting to a great extent from growing worldwide demand for energy. Strong oil prices lead to sustained growth which, in turn, is reflected in rapid population growth: between 1994 and 2004 the population in Qatar grew at an average annual rate of 4.2 percent. This strong rate of growth has made it necessary to create new residential space in the near-term, especially in the cities.

In just 36 months, turnkey construction of Barwa City, the new residential district, will be transferred to Barwa Real Estate. The tight scheduling presents special logistical challenges: up to 4,500 workers will carry out construction of the buildings at the 2.7 million square-meter site.

Quality is of particular importance for this project. Barwa City's 130 apartment houses will offer a premium level of comfort. Due to the region's high temperatures, all of the units, which have an average floor space of 120 square meters, will be fully air-conditioned and well insulated. Installation of complete kitchen facilities and modern communication technology will also contribute to the high living standard.

Bilfinger Berger has been operating successfully in the Persian Gulf region for some time. Among the Group's current major projects there are the expansion of a ten-kilometer long section of the city highway in Doha as well as the construction of a sewage treatment plant for 80,000 inhabitants including a 185-kilometer long network of sewers in the Emirate of Fujairah. The Arab states also represent an important market for services in the power plant sector. Bilfinger Berger Power Services has long been a reliable partner for the region’s energy industry.
