XFEL x-ray flash project in Hamburg: Bilfinger Berger to build tunnel system valued at €200 million
Bilfinger Berger has won an order to build major sections of the six-kilometer long winding tunnel system for the new XFEL x-ray flash facility in Hamburg. The project, with a total volume of over €200 million, will be carried out as a joint venture, 50% of which is accounted for by Bilfinger Berger.
The client is DESY, one of the world’s leading centres for research into the structure of matter. In addition to the tunnel system, seven shaft structures and underground research facilities will also be built. The x-ray laser will go into operation in 2014. With the help of high-powered x-ray flashes, it will be possible to analyze chemical reactions and map the atomic details of molecules.
