New tram line in Edinburgh:
Bilfinger Berger awarded contract for Scotland’s largest infrastructure project
The city of Edinburgh has awarded a contract for the construction of its new tram line to Bilfinger Berger and Siemens. The consortium under the leadership of Bilfinger Berger is now responsible for the core section of the 18.5-kilometer line and will ensure that it is fully operational at the end of the construction period. The contract has a volume of €350 million, Bilfinger Berger’s share amounts to €190 million. Edinburgh is investing a total of €640 million, making this the largest infrastructure project currently being undertaken in Scotland.
The city’s new tram system will begin operation in mid 2011. It will run from the Edinburgh Airport through the center of the city to the area of Newhaven in the north. Bilfinger Berger will carry out construction of the tram line itself, including numerous bridges and supporting structures, with technical infrastructure supplied by Siemens.
The United Kingdom is one of Bilfinger Berger’s most important markets for complex civil engineering works. The Company is currently responsible for the Westlink M1 Highway in Belfast, Northern Ireland. That project includes the design, financing and construction of new inner-city road links, as well as the operation and maintenance of 60 kilometers of major traffic routes over a period of 30 years.
Bilfinger Berger is focused on selected markets in its European civil engineering business. In addition to the United Kingdom, these markets also include Scandinavia, the Alpine countries and France as well as newer EU member-states such as Poland and Hungary. In civil engineering, Europe is Bilfinger Berger’s most important market after Australia.
