Major order with a volume of €220 million: Bilfinger Berger to build new container port in Sydney

In Australia, Bilfinger Berger has started 2008 with a major order: The Group, together with a partner, is expanding the deep-sea port in Botany Bay with five additional berths for large container ships. The order has a total volume of €300 million, of which Bilfinger Berger has a €220 million share.

For the expansion, 60 hectares will be dredged and the complete port infrastructure will then be built on this reclaimed land. Port Botany is the continent’s second-largest container port and is responsible for a third of total cargo movements. As of 2011, 3.2 million containers will pass through the port each year, thereby doubling the port’s current capacity.

Australia is the biggest market in Bilfinger Berger’s Civil business segment. Brisbane currently represents a regional focus of business activity. Here the Group has a significant role in two major transport projects with a €1 billion share of total order volume: The Company is building a total of 25 kilometers of motorway and a number of demanding tunnel and bridge structures. Bilfinger Berger expects the good economic conditions in the Australian civil-engineering market to continue in the future.
