Bilfinger Berger receives €300 million order for new subway line in Düsseldorf

Bilfinger Berger has won a contract to build major sections of a new subway line in Düsseldorf. With a total length of 3.4 kilometers, the so-called ‘Wehrhahnlinie’ replaces several above-ground connections and will provide significant relief to inner-city traffic when it goes into operation in 2015. The order has a volume of €300 million.

The dual-track tunnel tube will be built by the bored tunnel method using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The techniques selected for the construction of five underground train stations will ensure that traffic is disrupted as little as possible during the construction phase. Extensive foundation engineering works will serve to protect existing structures in Düsseldorf’s inner-city.

Bilfinger Berger is one of the world’s leading tunnel construction specialists. In its international markets the Group is experiencing continued strong demand. The company is currently executing out a number of large tunnel construction projects, including North-South Bypass in Brisbane, Australia, the City Tunnel in Malmö, Sweden and the main section of the Gotthard Basis Tunnel in Switzerland. In Germany, Bilfinger Berger is completing the North-South Underground Railway in Cologne. This too is a particularly technically demanding project in a crowded inner-city location.
