Major contract worth €260 million in Sweden: Bilfinger Berger to build five-kilometer railroad tunnel in Malmo

A consortium lead by Bilfinger Berger has won the contract to build a five-kilometer railroad tunnel in Malmo, Sweden. The Malmo City Tunnel will improve the rail link between the city and the long-distance rail line crossing the nearby Oresund Strait between Sweden and Denmark. The project has a total volume of €260 million, with Bilfinger Berger having a 50 percent share and two Danish partners, Per Aarsleff and E. Pihl and Søn, each having a one-quarter stake. The contract, issued by Sweden's national railroad authority, calls for the construction of two separate 8.9-meter-diameter tubes, as well as an underground station 250 meters long. Work will begin in February 2005 and is scheduled to take 52 months.

Bilfinger Berger is one of the world's leading tunnel builders. The company is playing a major role in the construction of the 13-kilometer-long Wienerwald railroad tunnel in Austria, which has a total project volume of €340 million. Along with Swiss and Italian partners, Bilfinger Berger is building the central section of the Gotthard base tunnel, a project worth €740 million. In Sydney, meanwhile, work is progressing steadily on the Cross City Tunnel, a privately financed, €520 million toll project being realized by a Bilfinger Berger-lead consortium. It is scheduled to open in mid-2005.
