Overseas success for Bilfinger Berger: New major orders in the United States and Egypt strengthen international position

Bilfinger Berger AG is involved in two large infrastructure projects with a total order value of €450 million in the United States and Egypt.

The American affiliate Fru-Con is constructing a lock system at Marmet on the Kanawha River in West Virginia. The new system with a chamber measuring 33 m by 240 m replaces an old structure and will significantly increase the capacity on this busy section of the river. The work has been commissioned by the US Government, represented by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The order value for Bilfinger Berger is €120 million.

In Egypt, Bilfinger Berger is constructing a barrage with two locks and a 64-megawatt power station on the lower course of the Nile near the town of Naga-Hammadi. The structure will help improve the water and electricity supply to Upper Egypt. Bilfinger Berger's share of the project is worth €80 million. The project has been commissioned by the Egyptian Government, represented by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

These new orders will strengthen Bilfinger Berger's position as a specialist in complex infrastructure jobs. Following its recent success in being awarded the contract for the construction of a cable-stayed bridge worth €250 million in Ohio, Fru-Con's latest success marks another step forward in the expansion of the American affiliate's civil engineering activities. In Egypt, Bilfinger Berger is following on from a number of successful major projects in the past. "This endorses our strategy of systematically expanding our overseas business in markets where the company is already well-positioned", states Chairman of the Executive Board, Herbert Bodner.
