Bilfinger Berger strengthens its position on the burgeoning Chinese market - joint venture for infrastructure projects founded with Beijing city authorities

Bilfinger Berger AG's expertise in implementing complex infrastructure projects is to form the linchpin of a joint venture with a construction company owned by the Beijing city authorities. The joint venture Chang Cheng (Great Wall), in which both partners have an equal share, will compete for orders aimed at improving the traffic situation in China's capital city. With the Olympic Games in 2008 not far away, the need for improvement is urgent. The ambitious plans include underground railway lines covering a total of 80 kilometers.

During the run-up to the celebrations to mark the founding of the joint venture on February 22, 2002, the Chinese Minister of Construction Wang Guangtao met with Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at Bilfinger Berger AG, Herbert Bodner, and the Member of the Board responsible for Overseas Business, Carlos Möller. Herbert Bodner was confident that the conditions needed for the business to flourish are in place - "With our Chinese partner's excellent position on its regional market and Bilfinger Berger's outstanding expertise in construction engineering, we've got the perfect team".

Bilfinger Berger is one of Asia's leading players in the implementation of complex infrastructure projects. With turnkey projects for underground railway lines in Bangkok and Taipei, Bilfinger Berger can justly boast high levels of expertise and service. Other reference projects include the construction of major stretches of the overpass network in Bangkok and the My Thuan Bridge over the Mekong River in Vietnam. Bilfinger Berger is currently also working on an 80 kilometer-long section of the high-speed railway link between Taipei and Kaohsiung.

The targeted expansion of Bilfinger Berger's international operations and its ultimate evolution into a Multi Service Group for building and infrastructure are central to the company's core strategy. This strategy centers around complex infrastructure projects and moves to strengthen the Group's existing position on selected overseas markets.
