This is the first time wind turbines have ever been built so far offshore:“Horns Rev 2” is 30 to 40 kilometers from the western-most tip of Denmark. The wind farm with a total capacity of 209 megawatts is expected to generate 800 gigawatt hours of electricity per year — enough to supply 200,000 homes. “That means, by the time it is completed, Horns Rev 2 will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world,” says Lutz Siemers, who manages the project for Bilfinger Berger Civil.
Dong Energy A/S, a Danish state-owned energy company, has commissioned Bilfinger Berger and its joint venture partner Per Aarsleff A/S to sink the foundations for the wind turbines into the sand banks that lie between nine and 17 meters beneath the sea. The steel piles are up to 40 meters in length with a diameter of 3.9 meters, and they can weigh up to 210 tons.
Work on the foundations was completed in October 2008 and the towers will be installed in spring 2009. The generators are due to come on stream by the end of 2009. Investment volume is in the order of €470 million. (ha)
