City district in Doha for 20,000 inhabitants

Bilfinger Berger has received one of the biggest contracts in its history: the company will build a residential district in Doha, Qatar for over 20,000 inhabitants. The project is valued at around € 1 billion and includes the entire infrastructure and turnkey construction of 6,000 housing units.

Arabian Gulf states are benefiting to a great extent from growing worldwide demand for energy. The strong oil price leads to sustained growth which, in turn, is reflected in rapid population growth. For this reason, new living space is required quickly in the cities. The new district of Barwa City is to be handed over, ready to use, in just 36 months. The tight schedule is a logistical challenge: up to 4,500 workers will construct the buildings over an area of 2.7 million square meters. The 130 apartment houses in Barwa City will offer a premium level of comfort. The residential units will have an average space of 120 square meters each and be fully air-conditioned and well insulated.

Bilfinger Berger has operated successfully in the Arabian Gulf region for many years. Current large-scale projects include the extension of the Doha city highway and the construction of a waste water treatment plant for 80,000 people, including sewage network, in the Emirate of Fujairah. The Arab states are also an important market for services in the power plant sector. Bilfinger Berger Power Services has been a partner of the energy industry there for a long time.
