The Naga Hammadi dam is 340 meters long. The structure comprises 2 locks for shipping, a weir with 7 gates, each weighing in at 160 tons, and a power station with a capacity of 64 megawatts—enough to supply around 200,000 households with electricity. The locks are 17 meters wide and over 160 meters long. Daytime temperatures in Naga Hammadi can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius: each day, 120 tons of ice was needed to cool the concrete as it set. The construction costs amounted to about € 300 million.
