Youth under threat: Work not school

According to figures from the International Labor Organization (ILO) there are 250 million children and young people aged between five and 14 worldwide who have to work for a living. Half of them work all day, often under extreme conditions. In match and firework factories they handle toxic materials without protection, in potteries and glassworks they are exposed to extremes of heat, and in the carpet industry they frequently suffer from respiratory diseases. According to the ILO, 56 percent of working children and young people are boys. However this number is deceptive as many girls work as domestic servants or even slaves in private households and are therefore not recorded in any statistics.
